Are Psychic Abilities and Mediums Real? Spirituality for Skeptics Series

In this post, I will explore several questions that I received on Quora to help you understand, are psychics and mediums real? We will investigate the following questions asked by real Quora users about psychic abilities:

  1. How accurate are clairvoyants?
  2. Is mediumship (communicating with the spirit of dead people) possible?
  3. Are psychic abilities real? I think of something and then within a week or less I see that something? It happens far too often for to be coincidence.
  4. How does the clairvoyant perform their tricks? Do they have psychic abilities?
  5. Is telepathy real? If yes, to what extent? What can a person achieve using telepathy and psychic abilities
  6. As a psychic, how do you respond to people who don’t believe in what you do?
  7. Are there any psychics or mediums out there that can prove to me that psychic abilities are real?

1. How accurate are clairvoyants?

Clairvoyant accuracy definitely depends on multiple factors, including the clairvoyant and their intention, as well as how they interpret the visual message. Clairvoyants “see” images in their mind’s eye that carry spiritual messages or guidance for others. Clairvoyance is one of many psychic abilities that we can all develop, and with the grace of spirit, it can be used to help serve others and ourselves.

I have been accessing my clairvoyant gifts for others for almost a decade and am amazed how accurately I can assess what is going on for a complete stranger. I set the intention to receive clear and accurate messages, and see what comes through. I also pray regularly and ask specifically for accuracy and clarity in my readings.

Most of the time, clients say I tell them stuff they have already been thinking about (which confirms it for them), and sometimes I tell them things (including past lives or names of spirit guides) that another psychic already told them (which confirms it for me). Sometimes I will see an image and not be sure why, only to later hear that the client met a person who met the description perfectly.

“Seeing” the images is not the tricky part, though. Interpreting them is. This is where most good psychics might mix up the message. For example, I “saw” an American Express card in a reading and interpreted this to mean my client needed to take more credit.

But when I told her exactly what I saw, the image took on a new meaning, because I saw the card she used to process payments at her corporate job, and so the guides were giving her help in that part of her life specifically. I wouldn’t have accurately known the whole meaning without letting her help interpret what I saw, because it had personal meaning to her.

That being said, of course there are sham psychics out there who just pretend to have access to spiritual information, but don’t. I would imagine their readings are not very accurate or only present information that benefits the psychic (such as telling the client they have a curse only the clairvoyant can remove, for a large fee). They probably tell everyone something broad-ranging that is likely to be true for most people and skip specific details.

Good psychics will provide enough detail that it is clear the information is personal and relevant to you. Skepticism is healthy, as I have had multiple clients who have been ripped off by these scam artists. My readings hone in on specific relationships, details, and images that would not apply to everyone, and I encourage my clients to rely on their own intuition and use me as support, not as their only source of knowing.

The best, though, is when a bunch of clairvoyants are around and can confirm that they sense the same thing. That is when I really get the chills and feel awed by having this connection to the collective consciousness and subtle energies of the world. For example, I have had healing sessions with multiple practitioners who clairvoyantly “saw” Jesus there, and the client felt extra hands on her and also “saw” his image. In this case, that is about the best confirmation you can get on something not typically visible to our senses.

You can develop the sense of psychic sight or clairvoyance for yourself, too. It just takes practice and trust. The more you do it, the stronger it gets, and you will begin to pick up on messages for yourself and others quite clearly. Your ego might say it is not possible or you are making it up, but over time, you may find that your visions are coming true!

An even better way for you to understand that it’s real is for you to develop your own natural gifts. We all have the capacity to connect with people who have crossed over, as well as our intuition. It is not supernatural, but rather super natural. Most people have been taught to deny or fear their gifts and so they think these psychic powers are not real.

Here are some resources I’ve created that might help you get started:

2. Is mediumship (communicating with the spirit of dead people) possible?

I know from direct experience it is possible, and in fact, it is extremely natural to be able to talk to loved ones (or hated ones, I suppose) after they die. Most frequently, people raised in our modern world are not taught about our psychic abilities, and in fact, many people are taught to fear their innate intelligence.

One of these natural capacities is our ability to communicate with the dead. It is truly as simple as bringing someone to mind, mentally asking them a question, and trusting the first response you get. And you can develop the skill further through practice and by meditating.

I did not seek this ability personally; rather, it developed naturally as I practiced Reiki energy healing on myself and on clients. I began to get messages from dead people through clairaudience (psychic “hearing”), clairsentience (psychic feeling), and clairvoyance (psychic “seeing”). Even I was surprised when my clients confirmed I was getting accurate messages from the dead (including information such as the way of death or personality characteristics).

I actually was a little put off by this newfound talent, but it feels good to give people messages of love from the deceased. It gives them hope their loved ones still watch over them and are available.

Once I cried as a woman’s dead grandmother impressed upon me that she loved the woman no matter what she did or didn’t do, just as she was. It just filled my heart with this pure unconditional love and made tears pour out. I have never felt such a wonderful feeling at any other time in my life, actually.

I’ve also seen headaches vanish when I gave a message from a dead loved one. Once the living person let go of guilt around how they handled the death, the headache vanished. So, even a physical issue can be a spirit communication. I wonder how many people pop a pill when really their dead loved one is trying to come through…

3. Are psychic abilities real? I think of something and then within a week or less I see that something? It happens far too often for to be coincidence.

Yes, they are real. You are noticing that you have claircognizance (you “just know”) and telepathy (receiving thought broadcasts) and precognizance (sensing future events).

It is happening so much to inspire you to embrace your psychic gifts and accept that synchronicities are real. It is an exciting time for you to consciously open to your spiritual self and life purpose and explore developing your natural psychic gifts.

It is wild. Most of my clients see 11:11 or 33 everywhere before they come to me for a Reiki session. It happens way too much to be random, and it happened to me when I was going through a spiritual awakening.

These numbers signal the planetary ascension of consciousness, guided by angels and spirit guides. These guides are also speaking to you through your thoughts and through these coincidences.

When I traveled to Sedona, the time between thought and manifestation was almost immediate. I used to think vortex sites were hooey, but the vibration in Sedona really does highlight and emphasize how thoughts are connected to reality. When I was there, I kept thinking of things I wanted (like chocolate), and someone would give them to me almost instantly.

4. How does the clairvoyant perform their tricks? Do they have psychic abilities

A clairvoyant is not a show dog that performs tricks. There may be some show magicians in Vegas who act this way, but really, a clairvoyant is an individual who accesses their natural intuitive gift of spiritual sight.

A clairvoyant receives images either internally (in the mind’s eye) or externally (as in seeing faces shift or seeing auras) that are spiritual messages. These clairvoyant messages come to help others live according to their life’s mission and plan.

So the clairvoyant performs their service by cultivating awareness of their thoughts, practicing meditation, trusting their intuition, studying clairvoyance, and being willing to communicate the impressions they receive to others.

5. Is telepathy real? If yes, to what extent? What can a person achieve using telepathy and psychic abilities?

Yes, it is real, whether one believes in it or not. We are all telepathically transmitting and receiving thoughts and other subtle sensations (or energy impulses) throughout the day.

It is easy to understand in the modern day because we see how radio transmitters broadcast and receive signals using technology. Telepathy is like this, but without needing wiring or equipment. I didn’t believe in it or think much about it when I was younger, but as I have grown older and explored meditation and energy healing, I have found that it is a skill I have and can develop and use. I believe we are born with this ability and it is up to us to reject or nurture it.

I’ve heard that indigenous people were so adept at telepathic communication that they would use it to communicate with children or individuals who were off hunting or foraging. I believe it because I have used telepathic communication to call my dog back to my house after he ran away and to call a cat to me when I was not sure where it was in the neighborhood. Both times, they returned posthaste. It was truly uncanny.

I have also experienced the power of changing my thoughts. I read in one of Sanaya Roman’s amazing books that our thoughts have energy that affect our external environment. I experimented with it at a drum circle and describe my experience in my Peaceful Presents Energy Healing Blog here.

Plus, it’s really not that far out, if you think about it. We understand that humans are influenced by different forces: gravity, magnetism, electricity, temperature, humidity, light, and so on. Nerves in our bodies use electrical energy signals to communicate, and these produce electromagnetic energy fields around our bodies. It doesn’t seem far-fetched to consider that our thoughts, sensations, and emotional experiences have some sort of form that can be broadcast and received even if we may not have the exact scientific explanation for it at this point.

Many of us have had experiences of feeling bad around a certain person and later discovered we were absorbing their emotions or their bad feelings toward us. We sense the truth of how they feel without them saying a word to us. How do we know these things?

For example, I once noticed for several days that it felt challenging to smile in my home. I wasn’t sure why until my roommate randomly yelled at me. I then realized my roommate was angry with me and had been festering over it for three days. I realized I had felt her anger and sensed the tension very subconsciously simply by being around her before she yelled at me. Even though she had not spoken to me, she was psychically broadcasting her true feelings.

This particular example may be more akin to empathy, but at the end of the day, empathy and telepathy are probably very closely related since they both involve sensing the energy of others at a level that is deeper than ordinary consciousness.

There is a lot more to explore with telepathy, and I encourage you to try it for yourself. The experiences of others might be interesting, but the experiences of yourself will be memorable and make an impression that far surpasses hearing tales from others or simply wondering what is possible…. You will never know until you try to see for yourself! 🙂

6. As a psychic, how do you respond to people who don’t believe in what you do?

When people say, “I don’t believe in psychics,” I laugh and tell them, “I don’t believe in people who don’t believe in psychics.” It’s silly.

Psychic abilities are natural and useful. Using our psychic gifts like clairvoyance, clairsentience, and claircognizance help us live our best lives and contribute our gifts to the world, in alignment with our spiritual purpose and life mission.

Uncovering your psychic gifts is the result of learning to harness the potential of both hemispheres of the brain, logic/intellect and intuition. It is our birthright as humans to access psychic awareness, but these abilities have been suppressed and denied for centuries in an attempt to control people and out of fear.

I don’t try to prove anything to a skeptic. I used to be one, so I know that they won’t truly believe until they have some sort of direct experience of their own abilities or a sort of mystical awakening from Spirit.

What you believe, you perceive. So if you are 100% staunch skeptic, chances are you will continue to see 100% non-psychic reality to conform with your strong beliefs.
