Why People Shut Down Psychic Abilities
I believe that our psychic abilities are not supernatural, but are super natural. It is our birthright to access our intuitive gifts, and they are here to guide us to realize our life’s purpose.
Many people have clairvoyant visions or hear clairaudient messages as children, but shut down these psychic abilities as they become adults.
So, why do people shut down these psychic powers? In this post, I will explain the top reasons why my clients and students have blocked their psychic abilities.

These reasons include: fear of unwanted visions, fear of being called crazy or being crazy, and fear that psychic gifts are demonic.
Fear of Having Unwanted Visions
Many of my psychic training clients have seen visions or heard messages that scared them. They shut down all of their psychic abilities because they don’t want to see a ghost or any other frightening psychic visions.

This is kind of like choosing never to see anything at all after seeing something frightening on TV. It might seem better to shut down the entire sense of sight to avoid seeing something disturbing again. But if we were to keep our eyes shut out of fear, we would also miss all the amazing things we see each day.
It would be better to learn how to handle it when and if you see a vision that is disturbing than to shut down seeing altogether. With training and awareness, it is possible to learn how to address any potentially frightening visions that might arise.
Plus, shutting down psychic gifts rarely stops them from manifesting anyway. It just blocks all the good that can come through connecting to intuitive knowing.
Fear of Being Called Crazy or Being Crazy
I don’t go out of my way to be called crazy, but at this point, I see it as a compliment. After all, for about 200 years, people thought the germ theory of disease was crazy… And Galileo had to stand up for his view that the sun is the center of rotation against Inquisitors.
Now we all know that germs cause disease and the earth rotates around the sun. If I said otherwise, I would be called crazy today, even though the original proponents were called crazy in their times. Most people who use the term simply mean that something is happening that goes beyond their understanding.
My unofficial theme song lately is Lost Frequencies and Zonderling’s “Crazy.” The part I really like goes like this:
“They can call me whatever they want
Call me crazy
You can call me whatever you want
But that won’t change me
I just don’t care what the world says
I’m gonna make it
They can call me whatever they want
So what if I am crazy”
Many people think my psychic awareness, energy healing abilities, or perspectives on the world are “crazy” because they have limiting beliefs that prevent them from accepting these facets of reality.
Them calling me crazy is not going to stop me from enjoying using my full brain (intuitive and logical), as well as my higher sensitivities I’ve developed from almost a decade practicing Reiki and sensing subtle energies most people are not even aware of.
It is possible to be grounded, practical, sane — and psychic.
Fear that Psychic Abilities are Demonic
It seems ironic that our intuitive knowing has been demonized for centuries. This probably connects to attempts by powerful authority figures to control people by dogmatically telling them what to think and how to behave.
Spiritual truth exists in our hearts, and we do not need an external authority figure to translate this truth for us. Our psychic gifts are one way we can access divine revelation directly and learn how to serve others and fulfill our life purpose.
Before Christianity, religious wisdom came through direct revelation to priests, priestesses, and shamans who served their community. As the Christian church established a propertied priesthood, direct revelation changed to indirect revelation, where followers were encouraged to consult the Bible rather than consult God’s wisdom in themselves.
Women who once were honored as wise, fertile, and loving were transformed into virgins or whores as the church attempted to control their procreative power and pass on property patrilineally, through the male’s name.
As the patriarchy took hold, a lot of women’s intuitive knowing was demonized along with women themselves. Women were burned as witches for around 600 years under the name of Christianity. True Christians would never advocate harming another based on their beliefs, but Christ’s spiritual teachings have been warped to support some pretty terrible paradigms in world history.
Still, prophecy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Learning to hear the “still, small voice of God” can help us navigate life. We can consult with a religious expert, but we do not need to have any book or practitioner to guide us on our spiritual path. Spiritual truth exists even if every book is burned, because it exists in our hearts.

When you connect to your spiritual guides and ancestors and feel their love, it is clear the messages are not demonic. It is actually spiritual service to open your psychic abilities and come in alignment with your divine purpose on the planet. Doing so can bring healing, wisdom, and peace.
It is wise to use discernment when opening your psychic powers, though. Demonic presences are real and can cause harm. But this doesn’t mean we have to be afraid or shut down our psychic abilities.
If we really thought about all the problems we might encounter by leaving our home, we would never leave the house. But we learned techniques to keep us safe and therefore feel OK to go out into the world. It is important to do the same thing when exploring the psychic realms.
Just as there are kind and loving people, as well as hateful and terrifying people, there are kind and loving spirits, and hateful and terrifying spirits. With discernment, you can differentiate between the two and learn to protect yourself so that you are able to receive the divine insight that is waiting for you.
