Spirituality for Skeptics: Skepticism is Healthy and Smart

Spirituality for Skeptics: It is smart to be skeptical about the unseen realms.
It is smart to be skeptical about the unseen realms.

The Spirituality for Skeptics series explores spiritual doubt and belief.

Are you skeptical about religion, spirituality, and psychic phenomenon? Good! We must use our intuition and intelligence to have discernment.

I used to be filled with doubt about religion and spirituality, but that has changed through my Reiki and meditation practice.

I think it is extremely healthy to question everything. You might find, however, that there is much more to the world than meets the eye once you start developing your psychic and intuitive gifts.

That’s right — I said your gifts. I believe psychic abilities aren’t supernatural; they are super natural.

Psychic Abilities are Here to Help Us Serve Others

We have all been blessed with intuitive gifts like clairvoyance (clear seeing), claircognizance (clear knowing), clairsentience (clear feelings), and telepathy (psychic communication).

Unfortunately, we learn to fear these natural human capabilities. Our psychic abilities help us realize our purpose on the planet. Our psychic powers are here to help us serve humanity.

Spirituality for Skeptics: From Raging Atheist to Clairvoyant Psychic Medium

I didn’t always believe in psychics or spirituality. Flash back about 15 years ago, and you’d find me at Boston Common, screaming at a man who preached about God. I was literally a raging atheist. As he preached, I shouted, “There is no God!”

At this time in my life, I was extremely logical and did not believe in anything “un-scientific.” I honestly thought a lot of religion was a hoax to control humanity. Now I realize there are spiritual phenomena that can’t be explained by the logical mind. Maybe one day scientists will find tools to measure various aspects of the unseen world, like the chakras and aura, but spiritual truth goes beyond the labels and descriptions of science.

Healing Power of the Holy Spirit!

My opinion on spirituality has changed, but not because of any particular person. It changed because I began having direct, personal, mystical experiences that were not explainable by my logical mind. I began to realize there is something more out there and that my mind was limited in its ability to perceive these phenomena.

Once, some girls found me sitting on a street corner and asked to pray for me. Although I was an atheist, I was opening to exploring spirituality at the time, so I said, “Sure.” They laid their hands on my shoulders and invited the Holy Spirit to fill me. When they were done, I looked at the pack of cigarettes I’d been smoking and no longer wanted them. I felt like I was on a natural high. Colors were brighter and scents were stronger. The buzz lasted for days. I had had my first personal experience of a spiritual presence and definitely wanted more!

Later, when I was crippled and bedridden from rheumatoid arthritis and Lyme disease, I prayed to the same Holy Spirit for healing. Now, I can walk again. I no longer need a cane or wheelchair to get around, and I am able to take care of my daily needs — and I can even dance and go for hikes. Experiences like this have bolstered my faith more than any time spent listening to a sermon.

These direct personal experiences make me enthusiastic about exploring issues of spirituality for skeptics. I am glad I had faith in a healing power. Giving myself Reiki and continuing my spiritual practices helped me greatly to heal and reduce chronic pain due to rheumatoid arthritis and Lyme disease.

Spirituality for Skeptics: Developing a Personal Spiritual Path

Vision quests are powerful experiences on a path of spiritual awakening.

This book, Vision Quest, helped me learn how to go on my own vision quest in nature. I enjoyed it so much, I go multiple times each year!

My spiritual awakening has included kirtans and Hare Krishna temples, Christian churches, Buddhist monasteries, and pagan prayer circles. It has been most enriched through personal vision quests in nature, based on the book Vision Quest by Sun Bear, and through my daily mindfulness meditation practice. I also completed a 10-day hermitage at the Lama Foundation near Taos, New Mexico.

You can learn more about my personal spiritual path and some of my spiritual teachers here. Brother ChiSing, a disciple of Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, has been very influential.

I have also studied shamanism for over a decade. Shamanism is the world’s oldest spiritual tradition, and it has been practiced in similar ways around the world in different cultures. I am drawn to Norse shamanism, which fits my genetic heritage. I can’t emphasize direct personal experience enough. In shamanism, you connect with the earth, and through vision quests, She becomes your teacher.

Learning Reiki Helped My Spiritual Awakening

My spiritual explorations led me to Reiki training. Receiving Reiki attunements activated psychic powers I did not know that I had, and soon I could not deny that there was more to life than rationality and reason.

Still, I am not here to convince anyone that your psychic powers are real or to tell anyone what spiritual path is right for them. I only hope to show that sometimes skepticism can transform — through direct personal experience of the divine.

When it comes to spirituality for skeptics, I believe it is key to be skeptical on the path. The Buddha taught not to do something just because he said to, but rather to rely on one’s own intellect and sense of what is right. There are many charlatans and wrong beliefs, and a lot of accepted dogma is not necessarily spiritual truth.

After decades of meditation and Reiki practice, I now see the world very differently than I did on that day in Boston Common, when I yelled, “There is no God!” I wonder how your worldview might change if you let yourself explore non-rational psychic phenomenon? There’s only one way to find out…
